Come on in, have a seat by the fire, and hear how it all began…

He’s barely set foot in the city when someone recognizes him as Archibold Stormblood, the immortal hero of legend. Worse, a lieutenant of the local crime lord overhears the exchange.

Not exactly the best way to start a vacation.

Charm, his companion, watches the unfolding chaos with her usual unreadable calm. She doesn’t raise her voice, but her rebukes cut like a blade. To her, his plan is reckless, foolish, and bound to fail.

But for Archibold, a little added trouble is worth the risk if he can become a tavern keeper and maybe—just maybe—experience the quiet, simple life he's long dreamed of.

Unfortunately, for a hero, nothing is ever that easy.

Can Arch find the right establishment to call home? Can he repair what’s unraveling between him and Charm? Or will the past catch up before he even has the chance?

Love the whole series ! Great fun.

This is a prequel to a wonderful series of books. The whole series is one which I love to re-read and will come back to over and over again. I really enjoy the characters - the interactions make me smile. I love the premise of the whole thing - so different from the usual fantasy adventure. Can't wait for the next book in the series and hope they keep coming for a long time !

Just my style. Some motives are a bit overused by now, like the interactions between Charm and Arch. Or how he overplays the harmlos guy.

Great fantasy read

I started with the prequel not knowing what to expect and had a blast reading it. Then this book released (it appears to be a new edition) and it turned out to be one of the most best fantasy books I’ve read in years. Instead of the usual “hero goes on a quest” story, "Arch", a legendary hero who decides to "go on vacation" and run a tavern. The setup is like cozy fantasy but it has parts action, humor, and mystery too.

What makes this book stand out is the cast of characters and how they interact with each other and I already know I'm going to be rereading this one.

Apparently the new editions of the rest of the series are releasing soon, but I'm not sure I can wait and I might just have to buythe rest.

How it Started

I love the humor that's thrown into most situations and is especially effective in tense moments of life or death encounters that totally throw the opponents for a loop. I can't wait for more.
